New 2017 Kia Niro

2017 Kia Niro Overview

New/Notable
  • All-new, subcompact hybrid crossover
  • EPA-estimated 52/49 mpg city/highway
  • Standard UVO eServices multimedia system
The 2017 Kia Niro is an all-new, subcompact hybrid crossover that seats five passengers. It competes with the Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and MINI Countryman.

Four trims are available: the FE, LX, EX, and Touring.

While many dedicated hybrid vehicles opt for more unconventional styling, it’s actually refreshing to see that the Niro looks more like a regular SUV. The front-end has all of the Kia styling cues: bug-eyed headlights, a hexagonal grille, and a sporty lower fascia with vertical-slit air ducts. Trim molding alternates back and forth between chrome and black around the windows and underbody. The rear-end also has a diffuser garnish for more rugged appearance. Standard features include power side mirrors, a rear spoiler, and 16-inch alloy wheels. HID headlights, LED daytime running lamps, fog lights, power/heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, a power moonroof, and larger 18-inch alloy wheels are also available.

Under the hood, the Niro is powered by a standard 139-hp, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electronic motor mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Fuel economy for the Base Niro is an EPA-estimated 52/49 mpg city/highway. The LX and EX trims have a lower rating of 51/46 mpg, while the Touring has a 46/40 mpg rating.

Inside, the Niro has a standard cloth interior with a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Cargo space is 54.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The center stack features the standard UVO eServices multimedia system that includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB port. It can be upgraded with a larger 8-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, voice command recognition, and a Harmon Kardon premium audio system. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows/locks, and push-button start. Leather upholstery, heated/ventilated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a wireless phone charging station, and a keyless entry system with an illuminated keyhole are available as well.

Standard safety features a backup camera and front and rear park assist. A blindspot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control are available as well.
