New 2016 Mazda CX-3

2016 Mazda CX-3 Overview

New/Notable:
  • Subcompact crossover SUV debuts as a new model for 2016
  • Standard rearview camera and push button start
  • Three trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring
The brand new 2016 Mazda CX-3 makes its debut this year, joining what is now becoming a crowded subcompact SUV segment.

The CX-3, which competes against several other new vehicles that have debuted in the past couple years including the Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, and Chevrolet Trax, comes about in response to consumer demand for vehicles that have a small footprint, but still offer more utility than a regular car.

From the outside, the CX-3 is distinctly Mazda; it shares many of its styling cues with other cars in the Mazda lineup, especially the Mazda3 hatchback. Up front is the familiar shield grille, flanked by sharp, angular headlight clusters that house standard daytime running lights. The sides of the CX-3 feature a curved beltline that dips down past the front fender, and blacked out rear pillars that make the roof appear as if it’s floating. 16-inch alloy wheels come standard, with larger 18-inch cogs optional. The CX-3 really is subcompact; it’s smaller in both length and width than the Mazda3, but is taller by about four inches.

Under the hood, the CX-3 only has one engine/transmission combination; a 146-hp, 2.0-liter SKYACTIV four-cylinder is mated to a six-speed automatic and standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional for those who want added traction in wet or snowy areas. Fuel economy figures are estimated at 29/35 mpg city/highway for FWD models, while AWD models get 27/32 mpg.

Inside, the CX-3’s interior is surprisingly high-quality for its price. Fit and finish are improved over the Mazda cars from a generation ago and materials are better as well; the cabin does use plenty of black trim pieces though, so be prepared for a darker aesthetic. Standard features include push button start, air conditioning, USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Also standard is a 7-inch touchscreen which can be operated by a knob controller located in the center console between the front seats. The screen is mounted high up on the dash (similar, again, to the Mazda3) for easier viewing. Also available are a BOSE audio system, leather upholstery, navigation, and HD radio. One thing to watch out for – the CX-3 doesn’t offer much cargo space, with only 12.4 cubic feet behind the second row which is less than most compact sedans.

Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE package is available, which adds a long list of safety technology including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, high beam control, automatic headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.
