New 2016 Kia Optima Hybrid

2016 Kia Optima Hybrid Overview

New/Notable:
  • Hybrid version of the midsize sedan
  • Can run on electric power alone at speeds up to 62 mph
  • Excellent safety ratings
The 2016 Kia Optima Hybrid takes the stylish Optima midsize sedan and adds a hybrid engine system to enhance fuel economy.

The 2016 Optima Hybrid is virtually unchanged from the previous model year. The Hybrid keeps the same basic shape as the gasoline version, but adds a few of its own details, including venting up front that improves aerodynamic, unique 16- and 17-inch wheel designs, and its own set of LED daytime running lights.

The hybrid gas-electric powertrain combines a 159-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine with a lithium polymer battery powered electric motor found behind the rear seats. Total output is 199-hp and the Optima Hybrid can run on electric power alone at speeds of up to 62 mph. The 2016 Optima Hybrid comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy figures vary slightly by trim level; LX models get an estimated 36/40 mpg city/highway, while the luxury style EX comes in slightly behind that at 35/39 mpg. This slight difference can be attributed to the EX’s additional 130 pounds of curb weight due to additional features.

Inside, the Optima Hybrid has a driver-centric dashboard that angles the center console slightly towards the driver for easier access to climate and audio controls. The Hybrid offers quite a few more standard features than the gas version, offering Bluetooth connectivity, USB/auxiliary input jacks, push button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a cooled glove box on every Hybrid model.  Available features include a navigation system with a high-resolution 8-inch touch-screen, Kia’s UVO infotainment system, heated front/rear seats, and leather upholstery. The Optima Hybrid has less cargo room in its trunk due to the placement of its batteries (10.8 cubic feet vs. 15.4 in the gas version), but the rear seat still splits 60/40 and folds down for storage of longer items.

Standard safety features include six airbags, active front headrests and seat-belt pretensioners, four-wheel disc antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. The 2016 Optima Hybrid got the highest possible NHTSA rating with a full five-star overall rating. A backup camera is also optional.
